Clean Air Counts
The Village is a Bronze member of Clean Air Counts (CAC). Clean Air Counts is a northeastern Illinois regional initiative to reduce ozone-causing emissions, thereby improving air quality. CAC is a collaborative effort between the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Started in 2000, CAC provides a non-regulatory approach to voluntarily reduce emissions by promoting cost effective clean air strategies to help the region attain and maintain compliance with Federal air quality standards.
Through participation in CAC, the village has received grants for the following programs:
Gas Can Exchange
-The Village exchanged 53 old cans for new, environmentally friendly spill proof gas cans. The cans were free of charge and the excess gas was disposed of according to proper environmental standards.
Lawn Care Buyback
-As part of its lawn care buyback program, the Village collected:
- 17 gas powered lawn mowers, 4 gas powered edgers, and 2 gas powered chainsaws
In exchange for this equipment, residents were eligible to receive a rebate of up to $150 for the purchase of new environmentally friendly equipment (electric or battery operated). Proof of purchase must be returned to Public Works by June 1st.
Diesel Retrofits
-Public Works installed diesel retrofits on 5 of its large dump trucks in 2007. The retrofits are designed to reduce emissions of soot, smog-forming pollutants, and other toxic air pollution caused by diesel-powered vehicles.
