Water Main Improvements (Lincoln Avenue, Chase Ave., Cicero Ave, Drake, Sauganash)
In December 2002 an engineering study of the Village's water distribution system was conducted. The study identified deficiencies in the Village's water system, primarily insufficient water flow in the northwest portion of the Village and dead end water mains which can cause bacteria to collect in the water system. Eliminating dead end water mains is an American Water Works Association best practice to ensure a potable water supply.
Fourteen locations have been identified requiring replacement and upgrade of existing water mains. A total of 11,150 linear feet of water main is being replaced and/or expanded to increase flows to the northwest portion of the Village. Within the water distribution system other necessary improvements will be undertaken to ensure a safe and adequate water supply including the replacement of all four inch water main and the looping of all remaining dead end water mains.
Another critical improvement is a new emergency water supply connection to the Village of Skokie's water distribution system. This will enable both Villages to connect to one another's water supply during an emergency.
Construction on this project will continue into the spring of 2008. All water main constructions and major restoration along Lincoln, Chase and Cicero Avenues is complete. Parkway restoration will be completed in the spring.
Work along Drake Avenue began on November 12th and is estimated to be complete by the end of January. No parking signs on Drake will be posted at least 48 hours in advance.
McCormick Resurfacing
The resurfacing of McCormick Avenue and a small portion of Touhy was initiated by the Illinois Department of Transportation. The majority of McCormick Avenue is being resurfaced from Touhy to Devon. Work is now completed on McCormick.
Touhy/Crawford Improvement Project
Through a partnership between the Village and the State of Illinois, significant improvements are currently underway on Touhy and Crawford Avenues. The improvements include new brick sidewalks, landscaped medians, street resurfacing, new curbs, parkway trees, and new street and pedestrian lighting.
The new street lights are now installed and the median plantings will be completed in early spring of 2008.
Water Meter Replacement
The Village will be replacing most of its residential, industrial, and commercial water meters with new automated reading meters. The water meter replacement program will allow the Village to electronically obtain more accurate information about water consumption, thus allowing the Village to detect problems such as water leaks and unusually high water bills quickly and efficiently.
Construction of this project will begin in March continue into the spring of 2008.
