Tree City USA
One of the main responsibilities of the Department is to ensure the Village's membership in the Tree City USA program. The Tree City USA® program, sponsored by The National Arbor Day Foundation in cooperation with the USDA Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters, provides direction, technical assistance, public attention, and national recognition for urban and community forestry programs in thousands of towns and cities. The Village is a large proponent of planting trees. In fact, the name "Lincolnwood" derives from the many tall trees along the Lincoln Avenue parkway that used to entirely shade the street. The Village plants trees in parkways through the 50/50 Tree Planting program, has a requirement that one tree must be placed every 25 feet in the parkway for new developments, and has a dedicated tree trimming crew. In order to meet the Tree City USA requirements, the Department annually assists the Village's Tree Commission in celebrating Arbor Day by planting trees.
