FIRE DEPT WARNS BUSINESSES OF POSSIBLE FIRE INSPECTION SCAMS Recently, two businesses in Chicago have been scammed out of money by one or more men dressed in Chicago Fire Department sweatshirts posing as city fire inspectors. In one particular incident, the subject informed an employee that the fire extinguisher tags were in violation and that he would have to shut the business down. As the employee searched for verification that the extinguishers were indeed in compliance, the alleged fire inspector went to another employee and told her that the manager sent him to get money, which the employee handed to the man.Unfortunately, the incidents that happened in Chicago are not isolated ones. Over the past few years, several communities across the country have experienced similar scams. Once inside businesses, these alleged fire inspectors may ask to collect fines for reported violations, perform work on fire alarm and sprinkler systems for a fee, or even steal personal property before they leave. The Lincolnwood Fire Prevention Bureau would like to ensure the business community that every fire inspector that enters your place of business will be professionally dressed in an official fire department work uniform. Additionally, every fire inspector will have a badge and you should not hesitate to ask to see it when in doubt. They will arrive in official village vehicles only. Following an official inspection, the occupant will receive a copy of the reported findings. Please keep in mind that the fire inspector will NEVER solicit business and will NEVER collect money for any violations. Please call the Lincolnwood Police Department immediately if you feel you are being solicited by someone impersonating a Village of Lincolnwood fire inspector. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to call the Lincolmnwood Fire Prevention Bureau at 847-673-1545. |
