The North Shore Mosquito Abatement District (NSMAD) has found the first positive West Nile Virus mosquitoes to occur in Lincolnwood traps this year. On June 26, a batch of mosquitoes collected have tested positive for West Nile Virus. This year West Nile Virus positive batches of mosquitoes have been found in all 14 communities represented by the NSMAD.
While the risk of West Nile Virus is low at this time, the NSMAD recommends that residents take personal protection measures to minimize mosquito bites including: using insect repellent, wearing loose fitting clothing and avoiding peak mosquito feeding times during the hours around dawn and dusk. Residents are urged to examine their property and eliminate any items that can hold water (water that stands for five or more days is a potential mosquito breeding site), particularly smaller items that may be easily overlooked.
