Trailhead Parking Lot Project

Location: Along the west side of the former Union Pacific right of way, between Lunt and Morse Avenues – MAP

Start of Construction: April, 2017

Completion of Construction: September 1, 2017

Contractor: Chicagoland Paving

Project Description: In 2013, the Village Board discussed the possibility of constructing a public parking lot in the Northeast Industrial Business District. At that time, it was determined that the most appropriate location was on the Union Pacific Railroad right of way that the Village was negotiating to purchase. The parking lot will serve both users of the bicycle path and businesses within the area. The parking lot is planned to have two-way access on Central Park Avenue and Morse Avenue and one-way access entering the lot off of Lunt Avenue. The parking lot will include 116 parking spaces and 5 handicapped parking spaces.

Estimated Construction Cost: $950,000

Funding Source: Village funds from the Northeast Industrial TIF District.

Project Updates: Update (September 15, 2017) – The parking lot is now complete and is open for use!

Update (August 16, 2017) – The permeable pavers are currently being installed with anticipated completion date this week. Lighting was installed as of last week. Paving will begin next week. A ribbon cutting ceremony has been scheduled for September 15 at 11:00 a.m.

Update (August 9, 2017) – The trailhead Parking Lot will receive brick pavers tomorrow, which are expected to be laid by next week. Next steps include lot paving, lights and signage.

Update (July 19, 2017) – The underground wiring for the light was completed this week. Earth excavation has also been completed. Paving and installation of permeable pavers is anticipated to begin within the next two weeks.

Update (June 28, 2017) – The curb perimeter for the Village’s trailhead parking lot for the Union Pacific bike path is currently being poured. The curb should be complete by the end of this week, weather permitting.

Update (June 14, 2017) – Excavation for pavement began this week with curb work anticipated to begin next week.

Update (June 7, 2017) – The stormwater sewer construction for the UP Trailhead parking lot for the UP Bike Path is expected to be completed by June 16. The next stage if of construction will include curb formation for the parking lot.

Update (June 1, 2017) – The sewer subcontractor has been working to install a 54-inch sewer to accommodate the required underground storage and stormwater conveyance for the parking lot.

Update (April 18, 2017) – A construction notice was hand delivered to all of the businesses in the vicinity of the parking lot project. Construction is anticipated to begin next week.

Update (March 22, 2017) – On March 21, 2017, the Village Board awarded a contract to Chicagoland Paving for the construction of the Trailhead Parking Lot. Construction is anticipated to begin in April.

Update (April 1, 2016) – The Village’s engineering firm, Christopher B. Burke Engineering Ltd. (CBBEL), is working to complete the design of the improvements.
